The Shepparton Diwali Mela celebrations are set to light up Mooroopna’s WestSide Performing Arts Centre this weekend.

Diwali Mela — also known as the Festival of Lights — is the most celebrated day on the Hindu calendar, and although there are many religions and cultures in India, everyone comes together to celebrate the event.

Punjabi and Shepparton community member Dhami Singh said this was the second year the festival would be celebrated and they were happy to be having it at WestSide Performing Arts Centre.

The festival will include Bollywood dancing, Punjabi bhangra (men’s dancing) and gidda (women’s dancing), as well as performances from children.

Mr Singh said the event would offer people a great taste of culture and a bit of fun.

‘‘We’re expecting locals to turn up. It’s not only for Indians, it’s for others in the community,’’ he said.

‘‘It’ll be fun, it brings the community together, especially the kids.’’

The Shepparton Diwali Mela celebrations will be this Sunday from 1pm to 7pm at WestSide Performing Arts Centre, Echuca Rd, Mooroopna.

Tickets are $35 for adults, $15 for children under 13 and free for children under 18 months.

Tickets can be purchased through the Riverlinks website or by phoning 58329511.
